Travel to Kigali Guide

1. Booking Flights to Kigali

Kigali International Airport (KGL) is the primary gateway to Rwanda. Major airlines like RwandAir, Qatar Airways, KLM, Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines offer direct and connecting flights to Kigali from various international hubs.

Best Booking Window:

  • Book Early: Aim to book your flights at least 2-3 months in advance (between now and December) for the best prices. February is still peak travel season due to the ongoing dry season, so early booking ensures availability and better rates.
  • Flexible Dates: If possible, search for flights on weekdays and avoid weekends for better prices.
  • Flight Aggregators: Use flight comparison tools like Google Flights, Skyscanner or Kayak to find the best deals.

2. Weather in Kigali (February)

February in Kigali falls within the dry season, making it a pleasant time to visit. Expect warm days with mild to cool nights.

  • Temperatures: Low: 16°C (61°F), High: 26°C (79°F)
  • Rainfall: Often dry, though short and sporadic showers are possible (but rare)

3. What to Bring

  • Light Clothing: Pack light, breathable clothes for the warm days. Consider business or smart casual attire for the conference. Cultural outfits are a great way to represent your culture and are well appreciated.
  • Layering: Evenings and early mornings can be cooler, so bring a light jacket or sweater.
  • Comfortable Shoes: Kigali’s terrain can be hilly, so comfortable walking shoes are advisable if you plan to explore.
  • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen are essential due to the equatorial sun.
  • Electronics: Rwanda uses the European standard plug type C or J, with a voltage of 230V. Bringing a universal adapter is advised.

4. Health and Safety

  • Vaccinations: Ensure your routine vaccinations are up to date. Yellow fever vaccination is required if you’re arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.
  • Health Insurance: Carry proof of health insurance (if you have it) and any necessary medications.
  • COVID-19: Check the latest COVID-19 requirements for travel, including vaccination and testing protocols.

5. Currency and Payments

  • Currency: The Rwandan Franc (RWF) is the local currency.
  • Payment Methods: Credit cards are widely accepted in Kigali and ATMs are available throughout the city. But carry some cash for easy transaction with smaller vendors or in case of issues with card payments.
  • Bringing Cash: If you are bringing in any cash to use, ensure it is Dollars, Euros or Pounds sterling as these are the most readily available currencies in local forex bureaus. You are likely to face difficulties exchanging from other currencies to Rwandan Franc.

6. Local Etiquette and Customs

  • Greetings: A warm handshake is the most common greeting, often followed by asking how one is doing.
  • Language: English, French and Kinyarwanda are widely spoken. Basic greetings and “thank you” in Kinyarwanda are well appreciated.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Modesty in dress and behavior is valued. Always ask permission before photographing locals.

7. Transportation in Kigali

  • Airport Transfers: Most hotels offer airport pickup services. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Yego Cab and Move are also available.
  • Getting Around: Kigali is known for its cleanliness and safety. Public transport includes buses and moto-taxis. However, for convenience, consider using taxis.
